Child Therapy

Child therapy can help alleviate your child’s suffering, facilitate growth and development and provide support to your family. In therapy, your child can gain a deeper understanding of what is troubling him or her. In a safe, non-judgmental setting, your child can learn to express feelings in effective and thoughtful ways. Child counseling can also foster increased self-confidence and assertiveness, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression and improve social skills. Through the therapy process, your child can learn more effective coping and problem-solving skills, as well as how to identify and utilize their strengths.

Dr. Madrid's clinical specialty has focused on trauma across the lifespan.  At no age are children immune to the effects of traumatic experiences. Even though adults work hard to keep children safe, dangerous events still happen. These events can come from outside of the family (such as a natural disaster, car accident, school shooting, or community violence) or from within the family, such as domestic violence, physical or sexual abuse, or the unexpected death of a loved one.

The way that traumatic stress manifests will vary from child to child and will depend on the child’s age and developmental level. Without treatment, repeated childhood exposure to traumatic events can affect the brain and nervous system and increase health-risk behaviors (e.g., smoking, eating disorders, substance use, and high-risk activities).      Dr. Madrid has extensive experience working with children and adolescent survivors of sexual assault, trafficking and school shootings.  She has been trained in Prolonged Exposure for Adolescents and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It is crucial that any therapist, treating children and adolescents impacted by trauma, utilize best practices in trauma informed care.

Adult Therapy

Life experiences are unique and the the type of therapy or combination of therapies must be uniquely fitted to the individual. The reasons people begin individual therapy are extensive and can be as varied as childhood sexual abuse, alcohol or drug addiction, depression, anxiety or relationship issues.

Many psychological issues begin in childhood and beyond our ability to understand them. Our biology also has a large effect on our emotional and psychological makeup. Other issues may develop over many years as a result of external influences or choices we make, and without awareness of long-term consequences. Individual therapy can help if your quality of life isn’t what you want it to be.
The single most important factor in successful therapy is the quality of the relationship between client and therapist. When there is a shared level of trust, and mutual respect, a deep understanding can be established to collaboratively develop goals.

Dr. Madrid makes psychotherapy more accessible, collaborative, and intuitive. This results in the client feeling more supported and equipped to confidently face whatever challenges life throws at them
